I’ve been trying for 2 years to become a beauty therapist and i have got nowhere with it,i didn’t get into college and i have been trying to get a modern apprenticeship, i bought a home learning course but cant do it because it is very hard and i have no one to help me,i have been on a 3 month voluntary placement in a salon but wasn’t able to be kept on as the owner hadn’t been open long and couldn’t pay a wage and i have completed a 1 day waxing course but have no experience waxing.I have contacted and sent out letters to all the salons in my area but have had no luck. I am 22 and from sunderland, does anyone know any salons who would take me on as an apprentice or train me further? I really need help with this, thanks.

Usually apprenticeships are for 16 – 18 year olds and now you are classed as a ‘mature student’.

My advice would be to keep applying to college to study Beauty Therapy. There must be more than one place in your area that offers the course so do some research and make your application form stand out/make sure it is free from spelling mistakes and really make it clear why you want to study beauty therapy.

Once you have completeted this course you may find that you need to carry out further study in massage, reflexology, tanning, etc but that is something your employer may help you with if they are willing to hire you with just the basic qualification.

Just remember there are so many people fighting for jobs like this and you are up against people with qualifications who will always be preferred over someone that needs training from scratch.

Another option is to see if any beauty salons need a Receptionist which would give you a ‘foot in the door’ and you could ask to observe treatments alongside going to college.x
